The incremental tobacco purchase ban and consequent gradual phasing out of all tobacco sales in the UK contained in the Tobacco and Vapes Act previously a Bill, has cleared its way through both Houses of Parliament and is currently awaiting to gain Royal Assent. If the King signs the Act, it will be enforceable starting 2027 that only those born before 2009 are eligible to purchase tobacco from the market and shops, meaning that our children and grandchildren will not be allowed to smoke by law.
Most of those born in 2009 will be 18-year-old adults by 2027 assuming the position of responsible citizen but will not be allowed to purchase tobacco from the market under the incremental tobacco purchase ban contained in the Act which increases the minimum age requirement to do so by one year every year as a progressively increasing linear variable. As a consequence, along with those who are younger, they will not be allowed to purchase tobacco for life.
This constitutes a condemnation for our children and grandchildren who will not be allowed to purchase tobacco for life, especially in comparison to previous generations of those who went into adulthood before the law was passed. Given the many people who die of smoking-related illnesses, who comprise of 2/3 of those who have smoked, who die before they would if it was not for smoking, it is arguably comparable to this situation to die restricted and deprived of your ability to purchase tobacco for once in your life ever since you were born. And this is the future of actionable constraint and restriction that past and present Labour governments have chosen for our country along with its people.
The Tobacco and Vapes Act will give ministers special powers to issue outdoor smoking bans in special areas of interest such as healthcare and care facilities, schools and other areas populated by children and teenagers and the areas around them, extend those bans to include vaping and heated tobacco use and regulate the smoking alternatives market. When it comes to tobacco and tobacco cigarettes and heated tobacco sticks, those bans along with all others will be directed to those eligible to purchase tobacco from the past because of their adulthood before the law was passed. But when it comes to vaping in terms of e-cigs, the minimum age requirement to purchase vaping material from the market will remain at 18 years, and all future generations of adults who cannot purchase tobacco cigarettes or heated tobacco sticks will still be allowed to vape with steam. The government run a relevant consultation on outdoor smoking and vaping bans closing on 08/05/2026 where proposed exemptions to outdoor smoking bans include care homes, nursing homes, boarding schools and assisted dying hospices.
