Reform UK leader Nigel Farage who is a smoker himself has vowed to abolish the generational tobacco purchase ban if he and his party win the next general election in 2029 in an article the Reform UK leader wrote in The Telegraph. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage wrote in The Telegraph that ;
” I can promise that the generational smoking ban will not last long if Reform gets the chance to start rebuilding our mismanaged country. There are other far more effective and civilised ways to ensure that young people do not take up vaping and smoking, and so protect their health for decades to come. As for those like me, known to enjoy a pint and a cigarette, we have been told the risks and we are prepared to take our chances. How is the ban meant to work? Ten years from now, a 27-year-old will not be legally able to buy cigarettes, but a 28-year-old will be able to. A decade later 37-year-olds will not be deemed old enough to smoke, but 38-year-olds will be free to do so. “
The Tobacco and Vapes bill which has almost gone through all stages in parliament will forbid the sale of tobacco to all citizens born after 2009, gradually phasing out tobacco sales until no living person is allowed to purchase tobacco in the foreseeable future. One would imagine that once that happens the people living in those future times would decide what to do again and revise concluded facts under their control themselves and what they know from the past. The first country to legislate a generational tobacco purchase ban was New Zealand where the prohibitive legislation approved on the 13th of December 2022 was abolished by the next three party coalition government.
The UK generational smoking ban was inspired from the New Zealand one to the previous Conservative prime minister and minority leader to Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, before this Labour government was formed on the 5th of July 2024. Rishi Sunak who gave his original version of the Tobacco and Vapes bill for voting in parliament proclaimed an early election on the 4th of July 2024 which postponed the progression of the bill through parliament. The bill was then rewritten by the next government which passed it through parliament and is about to make it into law.
This would backfire negative reactions and legal action on behalf of the European Union over the compatibility of the legislation with the Windsor Framework concerning trade, tariffs and the circulation of goods between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Seven EU countries have expressed their concerns over protest to the UK government over free trade and the circulation of goods which would be undermined by the Tobacco and Vapes bill. Those countries are Greece, Italy, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia and Croatia which have filed complaints and detailed opinion reports to the UK government about the Tobacco and Vapes bill in relation to the Windsor Framework (read more).
