Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan speaking from Istanbul announced that his country’s government is planning for a generational smoking ban similar to the one threatened in Britain by prime minister Sunak before the election announcement, whereby anyone including adults born after 2009 would not be eligible to purchase tobacco products even after 2027 when those born in 2009 will become 18 and acquire their legal responsibility.
The plan announced by the Turkish president is following the same prototype as Rishi Sunak’s Tobacco and Vapes draft bill, which was postponed until after the election if he were to win it, and he mentioned 2009 as the year those eligible to smoke would have been born before.
Turkish president Erdogan has imposed generic tobacco packaging legislation in Turkey during late 2018 and has now announced that his country’s government is pursuing an equally horrid to those generic wrappers’ appearance generational tobacco ban. He mentioned that 85,000 Turks die every year because of smoking related disease and that 20,000 people die from them every day around the world. The president of Turkey said that the tobacco industry is exploiting open windows and loopholes in the law introducing new products that deteriorate people’s health and compared that to their annual profits which he stated amount for 700 billion US dollars.
