Liz Truss has announced her resignation after just 44 days in the top political office of Britain’s prime minister, bowing to unbearable pressure from her own Conservative party and the main opposition Labour party under Sir Keir Starmer, who is calling for an election, with his party at 54% of voting intention against 25% for the ruling party, and for the appeals of two Conservative MPs who officially requested her resignation.
That makes Liz Truss the shortest-serving British prime minister in history, a day after she told Keir Starmer in the Commons that “I’m a fighter, not a quitter.” It also means that the smoker-friendly Tereza Coffey vice-premiership has gone with Liz Truss and jeopardised by her resignation setting the next government in control of all related issues. Tereza Coffey is the Health Secretary that Liz Truss appointed. She smokes and has received financial help and hospitality from Imperial Tobacco and voted against all counter-smoking legislation along with Liz Truss. Liz Truss also appointed as chief of her staff in 10 Downing Street former tobacco industry collaborator and personnel Mark Fullbrook who has also gone with her resignation. Mark Fullbrook worked for Philip Morris International, the largest tobacco company in the world as well as British American Tobacco (B.A.T.), the second largest one.
The announcement was made by Liz Truss after a meeting with the 1922 parliamentary committee, made up of representatives from the Conservative party, in which she said she had notified King Charles of her resignation and that the ruling party would nominate a new prime minister from its leader without an election which neither Liz Truss nor Boris Johnson called, while the king has already granted the state constitution which has been in force since the year 1215, today in combination with other laws and conventions.
Neither Boris Johnson nor Liz Truss have called an election following their resignations, handing the prime ministership to the next leader to-be of the first party to emerge from the last 2019 election following Theresa May’s transition government of the EU exit referendum.
The latest developments before the resignation of Britain’s second prime minister later this year include the replacement of finance minister Kwasi Quartet by Jeremy Hunt following the backlash and political treatment of his mini-budget and the resignation of home secretary Suella Braverman yesterday and her replacement with Grant Shapps.
Liz Truss announced along with her resignation the assignment of the prime ministership to the leader who will emerge from the ruling party according to internal party procedures with the possible candidacy of Boris Johnson being the most popular member of the Conservative party more than the outgoing Liz Truss second in popularity, and stated that she was unable to distribute the current government program for the state’s economic policy.
Two days after the elevation of Liz Truss to the position of Prime Minister on September 6, 2022, the Queen of England Elizabeth II died on September 8, and for her funeral in 11 days since then, 6 billion pounds were spent by the British public.
