“The anti-smoking campaign has written our laws” argues lifestyle choices association representative Simon Clark

In an interesting and revealing interview with the Asian magazine Tobacco Asia, published by the Inter Tabac exhibition in Dortmund, the president of the British smokers’ association FOREST, Simon Clark, defends the demands of smokers by excluding himself and facing the challenges of the present and presently relevant created mindset of a large portion of the public. His view is that preferably people are not necessarily divided into groups of people such as pipe smokers and regular smokers but are consumers regardless of habit and trend having the right to exercise them.

Simon Clark aptly structures the division between public and private spaces by integrating private spaces in line with the aspirations of their owners regarding the smoking ban applicable to public spaces.

The Chairman of the smokers’ association also demonstrated his respect for the right to choose among restaurant owners and of its exercise by saying that it belongs to them together with everyone else in order to choose the separation of the facilities they have in smoking or non-smoking zones, pointing out right of their own free will, with which the interviewing journalist agreed.

Simon Clark argued that the provisions of the current smoking ban must depend on and be regulated by forces of free trade and the law of free trade.

That anti-smoking campaign ended up being identified with the cause of public health as well as on the contrary the care for public health adopts the views of the anti-smoking campaigners who have unilaterally written the laws. That this prevailed without being able to distinguish between the two as the anti-smoking campaign gives work to thousands of people having repulsed the tobacco industry for which it is still claimed to have been ‘big tobacco’ and a multinational enterprise.

He clarified the difference between proper smoking education and coercion and oppression and said that the goal of a 2035 free from cigarette smoke is an excuse to exert more pressure and unequal governance from the state to the citizen. He expressed that any other measure means the anti-smoking campaign is running out of ideas and they serve to justify their existence.

The taxes generated by the purchase of cigarettes adequately compensate for the health costs it incurs, in particular when their prices are soaring and the illustrated health warnings as they have, also make the single package a corresponding failure by removing the artistic characteristics of the packaging, according to the representative of the English smokers.

At the same time, Mr. Clark wonders how it is possible to vote at the age of 16 and have to turn 21 years old in the U.S. to smoke the first time. Research into the effects of passive smoking may not draw more concrete conclusions which, according to the president of the association, do not accompany the direction of the anti-smoking campaign.

Forest was formed in 1979 with the participation of British veterans and pilots of the Royal Air Force to represent smokers and defend their rights nationwide and since 1999 has been chaired by columnist Simon Clark and a staunch non-smoking supporter and evolved into the largest union of its kind governed by members possessed by liberal and socially progressive ideologies.

The name FOREST comes from the initials of the words ‘Freedom Organization for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco’, while its subsidy comes from the current Imperial Brands to the former Imperial Tobacco and British American Tobacco (BAT) and Japan Tobacco International (JTI Gallaher) which alone subsidizes the branch, operating after January 2017 of the European Union, although as it clarifies, it forms an association that acts independently, representing its own views from those of the participant members. Forest’s Eireann branch, which is open in Ireland since 2010, has been making strong progress since the indoor smoking ban was first enacted in that country in 2004 since when the union’s demands were valid.
