The following government petition aims to avoid inflicting a generational tobacco purchase ban on UK citizens by raising the legal age to smoke to 21 instead. This is what should happen instead of condemning the population of the UK to be unable to exercise one of their natural rights – to purchase tobacco from above the age of maturity, above the age of legal responsibility and potentially above the age of self-guardianship of 21.
Raising the smoking age to 21 is not a restriction as it does not restrict 18, 19, and 20-year-olds from buying tobacco instead of requiring them to wait for 3 more years before they can do so. This does not restrict anybody’s freedom and everyone’s rights are respected when it happens just like when the age 21 years old was 16 or 18.
If Donald Trump didn’t set the smoking age to 21, anti-tobacco activists alike anti-smoking proponents would demand generational smoking bans in regions of the US whereas now they have no further causes to pursue. Nobody who doesn’t need to smoke is smoking and smoking is not getting in schools for no reason and the smoking rate is adjusted to suit the anti-smoking campaign with only those needing to smoke being smokers.
Had what Donald Trump cleverly achieved been the case for the rest of the world, there would be no anti-smoking campaign because it wouldn’t have a reason to exist without anything more to do and people would be free to smoke inside as well only because you can do so after you become 21 years old.
When somebody is 21 years old, they have entered university or found another job, can finance their smoking habit independently before taking it up. No smoking with school youth means no anti-smoking campaign or having a reason to speak.
Trump has now halted the anti-smoking campaign in the US which has nothing to campaign for since you need to be 21 to buy tobacco. If that was already happening ages ago around the rest of the world, the anti-smoking campaign would not have developed and smoking would still be allowed inside for the adults over 21. This doesn’t restrict anybody’s freedom. It is still the same thing as before. It is a legitimate form of expected regulation put in place for exactly the same social reason and it is not like banning you from exercising your rights like the smoking ban etc.
The anti-tobacco campaigners in Ireland holding the placards with “Tobacco 21” written on them have finished work! They finished work because they got what they wanted. Fortunately enough, anti-tobacco activists are not going to engage our attention anymore in the US or Ireland where the same has been approved by parliament expected for enactment as of February 2025 or Indonesia where the same happened earlier during 2024. Indonesia is a very smoker-friendly place where children were legally allowed to smoke right until 2020, and they have now given anti-tobacco activists what they wanted by setting the smoking age to 21 and achieved the most targeted milestone of closing down the reason behind their campaign.
No “action on smoking and health” needed anymore with the age at which you can buy tobacco set as 21 years! If you are a UK resident or citizen and don’t want to share your society with victim-citizens of the state who are legally obstructed from exercising one of their natural rights to buy tobacco at the time when they are fully entitled to do so as adults of legal responsibility, sign the petition to set the legal age required to buy tobacco to 21:
Set the age requirement to buy tobacco to 21, do not gradually increase it.
We think the Tobacco and Vapes Bill should set the age requirement to buy tobacco at 21 instead of gradually increasing the age limit, and therefore making some citizens never able to buy it at all. We think this will effectively control smoking rates.
We think that only those who will feel the need to smoke will then do so. We think this could control the smoking rate according to the needs of society and its members instead of eliminating it.
