The decline in smoking rates and a simultaneous rise in the use of electronic alternatives continues in the United States, where it was recorded for 2022 that only 11.3% of Americans smoked, a rate going down from 12.6% who smoked in 2021, and 5.9% of citizens vaped, up from 4.7% of those who vaped in 2021.
The CDC released data from a sample of 27,000 Americans, but noted that smoking in the U.S. is still the leading cause of preventable mortality. In the year 2020, 14.1% of the male and 11% of the female population smoked. However, the smoking rate of the U.S. population demonstrated a slight increase in 2019 and 2021 increasing by 0.3% and 0.1% respectively.
