With Republicans in control of the US House of Representatives, smoking has once again become possible inside the Capitol building, another victory for Democracy in the land of the free, America.
Indoor smoking may be prohibited in Washington, D.C., however, the House and Senate are federal property and are therefore governed by rules that are mostly left to the leadership of the House and Senate.
In 2007, then-Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, much derided by Donald Trump, who resigned after her party’s defeat in the 2022 midterm elections, banned smoking from the premises at the same time as the introduction of the British anti-smoking law, although the members could smoke inside their offices. The Republican majority has now restored smoking throughout the building. Under the leadership of newly elected Kevin McCarthy, the House has become one of the few office buildings in the country where smoking is allowed!
